Network with Big Fish using small moves

Exactly what you need to do when networking with high profile people to build trust in record time

When you’re going fishing for big fish, your job is not to impress. It’s simply not to make a bad first impression.

Whilst title’s are useful societal shorthand, we are all really just monkeys wearing suits:

Sometimes it’s a well tailored white suit with high heels.
Sometimes it’s an inconspicuous beige cardigan and a pair of spectacles.
Sometimes it’s high performance lycra and helmet.
Other times its dad’s old shirt that comes out when painting walls.
Sometimes it’s nothing at all (when in the shower… obviously!)

They spill coffee on their whites, forget to mute on Zoom, have strange -isms, and when they feel like they’re faking it, hoping no one notices.

So, what does this mean for you when you’re trying to connect with someone influential?

Big fish do not need more fish. They need someone interesting to swim with.

This doesn’t mean playing it safe or blending in—it means stripping away the pressure to perform. The most important thing you can do is show up as someone real, someone who’s worth engaging with.

Here’s how you do it:

1. Be Brief

Introduce yourself in a few sentences, (with optional sprinkle of spice). The main thing is to avoid giving them a reason to dismiss you (giving the extended life story).
